About the Job: The Bon Air Juvenile Correctional facility operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with 8 and 12-hour shifts available for hourly/wage staff. Shift availability is contingent upon the needs of the facility. This role is on a part-time hourly basis committing to an average of 29 hours per week. Weekend and holiday availability is desired by selected candidates.

The Juvenile Correctional Specialist will: implement best practices in the supervision, security, and treatment of juveniles in a correctional setting, to provide residents with a safe living environment conducive to growth and change. Duties/Responsibilities: Oversees and monitors all activities, maintaining security and control to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents and staff. Conduct and document security/safety checks and intervene in behavioral crisis situations to ensure safety through the use of approved intervention/de-escalation strategies and techniques to include by are not limited to, verbal de-escalation, physical restraint, and mechanical restraints. Engages and encourages residents to achieve treatment and personal learning goals to assist in their life-long success. Completes all administrative and program documentation (such as time sheets, leave forms, incident reports, logbook entries, various forms, etc.) legibly, completely, timely, and accurately. Documents activities, observations, and interactions with residents, staff, and the public, in accordance with procedures. Completes required forms and reports, behavior management program data, logbook entries, and other written documents. Works as part of a multi-disciplinary treatment team dedicated to helping young people reach their goals while in a secure environment and preparing them for successful reentry into the community. This position fosters a therapeutic environment by serving as a role model and mentor to residents and by maintaining 24-hour safety and security.

This position is hourly/wage and does not include state health benefits.

As a requirement of this position, you will need to be able to commit to an initial basic skills training conducted at the Virginia Public Safety Training Center.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will working knowledge of conflict resolution and the use of verbal intervention techniques, of safety and security procedures and practices, and of crisis intervention in a residential or secure setting. Demonstrated ability to quickly assess situations and provide the appropriate response, to effectively supervise and work with residents, and to serve as a positive role model. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, to maintain records and documentation, and prepare reports. Ability to perform physical intervention (restraint) techniques in accordance with procedure and training.

Additional Considerations

Working knowledge of safety and security procedures and practices; crisis intervention
in a residential or secure setting; facilitating and/or implementing treatment programs; and
adolescent development.
